What Form 124 is

Form 124 is the employee’s statement to the employer of the exemptions and deductions they want taken into account for TDS, with the evidence. It replaced Form 12BB from 1 April 2026 (section 392(5)(b) and rule 205 of the new Act and Rules).

Most of these claims reduce tax only under the old regime. Under the new regime, the standard deduction and a few items such as the employer’s contribution to NPS count, and most savings and allowances do not.

Common claims and the proof each needs

ClaimEvidence
House rent allowanceRent receipts or the rent agreement; the landlord’s PAN if rent is more than ₹1 lakh in the year
Leave travelTickets and travel evidence for the journeys claimed
Interest on a home loanThe lender’s certificate, with the lender’s name, address and PAN
Savings and insurance (the old 80C family: PF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance, tuition fees, principal repayment)Receipts, statements or certificates
Health insurance, education loan interest, donations and other deductionsReceipts or certificates

The yearly cycle

  • April: employees choose the regime and declare planned claims; payroll uses the declarations for TDS.
  • Around January: the employer opens a proof window; employees upload evidence.
  • Payroll verifies each proof and replaces declared figures with verified ones, so the last months’ TDS makes up any difference before 31 March.
  • Claims not proved are dropped for TDS; the employee can still claim them in their own return.
In WebHR

In WebHR employees declare under My Account → Tax Statement on the web, or in the mobile app, and upload proofs during the window HR opens (Statutory → Tax Declarations). HR verifies or rejects each declaration and each proof, and payroll uses the verified figures.
